FRENCH ONION GRILLED CHEESE

French onion grilled cheese

Did you know that you too can be called a Michelin star chef?? That’s what my husband called me after making this gourmet grilled cheese!! You can impress your family too with this amazing French onion grilled cheese.

This grilled cheese was so easy to make and was such a delicious treat. We love grilled cheese around here, so this was the perfect way to switch it up a bit and make something a little more decadent. There’s really just the one extra step of making the onions, but they are so worth it! I used Gruyère cheese because that’s typically the kind they use to make French onion soup (trust me, I was born in Quebec!!) but in theory you can use any cheese you have available in your fridge.

I also used gluten free sourdough bread for mine, but of course you can use regular bread. I do suggest using a sourdough or something a little heartier like a crusty bread (as opposed to a regular white bread).

It doesn’t matter at the end of the day if you follow the recipe to a T or make your own adjustments to your liking, the point is, make it. Trust me! So who’s trying this one?? It’s SO GOOD!!!

LET’S START:

INGREDIENTS:

-Bread of choice (I used gluten-free sourdough)
-Gruyère cheese
-Butter
-Onions
-Pinch of sugar (I used date sugar)
-Pinch of salt

STEPS:

  1. Start by slicing your onions.
  2. Cook them on med/ low heat in butter or oil.
  3. Half way through cooking add a pinch of sugar and salt.
  4. Once golden brown they are ready. Be patient with it. It’s worth it, trust me.
  5. Place butter in pan and add a slice of your bread of choice.
  6. Load up your Gruyère cheese and top with you carmelized onions.
  7. Add the second piece of bread.
  8. Flip and cook on the other side til bread is golden and crispy.
